Those of us that are involved in any way with the advertising, creative or design fields must be drawn to this fabulous movie. Tonight is the LAST NIGHT to see this stunning film, so head on over to the Northwest Film Forum on 12th Ave and Pike Street in Seattle for either of the showings at 7:00pm or 9:00pm. This small boutique movie theater is the perfect location for a documentary film filled with passions and inspirations.
Although advertising is almost a dirty word in today's world, it has had a profound effect on modern culture. Art & Copy takes you through some of the most exciting personalities and influential creatives that have built this industry. To mention a few and wet your appetite, Dan Wieden discusses his "Just Do It" slogan for Nike which in reality changed the way we all think of athletics. Mary Wells Lawrence tells her history with the reinvented big bad apple via her "I love NY" campaign and forever lifted New York to a destination. Cliff Freeman shares "Where's the beef?" and Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein asked, "Got Milk?" My personal favorite, George Lois, a true New York ad man, just grabs you with his intensity for art, creativity and work ethic. These truly are the pioneers of the modern advertising age, the Mad Men we are all fascinated with and dare not miss on AMC!
I for one loved the insight, the plain speaking and the knowledge that this is a very special group of people discussing their craft with a love for what they do. This should be seen by all that appreciate art and the world of words. It felt good to be among others that felt the same as me on a beautiful warm summer evening in Seattle. In the words of George Lois, " Advertising is not a xxxxxxx science, advertising is an art - no question about it."
This movie was produced by Doug Pray, a documentary film maker that has a talent for pulling all the emotion on to the big screen.
Jan,
I was able to see this last night. I've always had personal mixed feelings about advertising. I've always tried to resolve that by doing good work which I believe in. I like how this film explores the creative dynamics, but also frames advertising in a larger context as simply another avenue of human communication.
Thanks for the rec!
