Design...In About an Hour!

It struck me recently as I was updating my blog, checking my work email, Comcast, and gmail accounts, responding to a friend request on Facebook, looking for a profile photo for Linked-in from my Picasa account while listening to my Pandora radio stations on my iPhone, and signing up for Twitter...that I have a lot of things demanding my time and energy that I didn't have even a year ago (and a lot of freakin' accounts, eek). It all makes me think how I am-or am not-fitting it all in...which is something I haven't actually really thought about (I'll let you know when I do- no time now- I'm blogging).

I remember when email started to supersede phone calls, driving proofs around and faxing approval forms. Chunks of time were found that were previously consumed with lengthy forms and good old Seattle traffic. And we all know what happens when we find time-we fill it (of course). Suddenly what took three hours to accomplish takes one-so why not fit three things in, instead of one (all you Type A's are nodding in agreement).

As our pace quickens, so do our expectations. Not only our expectations of others, but of ourselves. With the ability to simultaneously host a conference call, while watching a webinar and texting my husband what to pull out of the freezer for dinner, I find myself getting frustrated when anything takes more time than I think it should. This includes design. It's easy to forget that the creative process doesn't have a short cut. It takes time to concept, illustrate and execute ideas. To be honest, it's a relief to slow down, get out a sketch book (or whatever blank paper is sitting next to me at the moment I get an idea) and enjoy the process. That is until I realize I need to update my blog, check my work email, Comcast, and gmail accounts, respond to a friend request, look for a profile photo for Linked-in-you catch my drift.
