Drawing a line in the social media sand

For better or worse, I'm a child of the social media generation. I have no problem defending the value of Facebook, I enjoy reading Tweets from my friends and I like finding out about interesting restaurants and bars that people have visited through their FourSquare posts. I think social media presents an opportunity for people to connect in new ways, and can help them stay in touch and share their ideas.

At its best, social media should be a way to augment real, in-person socializing, and participants should ideally only share what they would be willing to share in real life. And yet, that's just not the case, because the over sharing I've witnessed lately is really getting out of control.

Seriously people, sometimes enough is enough.

Just as restraint is critical in daily life, it's also necessary when it comes to what you write about yourself on Facebook. Just because you have a burning desire to share something very personal or exceptionally mundane doesn't mean that you always should. In a world where people can share so much more information with so many people, exercising judgment should not become an antiquated concept. In many ways, it's more important than ever.

Social media is a way to share more of your life, but certainly not your whole life. That's for your family and close friends, not your 500 Facebook acquaintances.
