When I was growing up my mom had a subscription to Gourmet. She would store them away in this huge cabinet dedicated solely to the purpose of housing the great treasure trove of recipes and food preparation techniques. Not only was Gourmet a great resource for this aspiring cook, but I could look at the photographs for hours.
But today Conde Nast decided to put an end to the nearly 50 year-old publication (its first issue was in 1941) in an effort to restructure during these economic hard-times.
What's scary to me about the loss of this iconic magazine is that it reflects a growing change in the way people consume information that the magazine and newspaper industry are not positioned to adapt to. Why buy content when you can find it for free? When we can find recipes online and when we can watch our favorite Top Chef make a favorite dish, why pay for a magazine subscription?
The answer for me is: You pay for it because it's worth the money. Because there's nothing quite like being able to hold a magazine in your hands and flip through the pages.
But fact of the matter is that Gourmet magazine produced great original content. Gourmet had a way about the transfer of ideas...they had a style all their own. So here's to you, sweet Gourmet. You had a great life and I will miss you.
