Recently on How I Met Your Mother, the main character Ted, introduces his friend Barney to his "Murtaugh List," a list of things he's too old to do. The name comes from Lethal Weapon's veteran police officer Roger Murtaugh, played by Danny Glover, who reluctantly finds himself in life-or-death predicaments and grumbles, "I'm too old for this shit."
On Ted's list were things like:
• Beer bong
• Pierce an ear
• Do laundry at mom's house
• Help someone move from a 6-story walk-up in exchange for pizza
• Attend a rave
While watching Barney attempt every item on the list to prove his eternal youth, I realized that even though I've never written it out, my own Murtaugh List exists in my head. I think I'm too old for lots of things, like:
• Playing Twister
• Wearing skinny jeans
• Getting a tattoo
But what's surprising is when I run across people in our industry who have a work-related Murtaugh List. There are media buyers who seem afraid to tackle new media, sticking with recommendations that revolve around traditional outlets instead. There are marketing consultants that caution clients against blogs, because they're just for "20 somethings." And there are entire agencies that don't seem to be aware that many print projects are going the way of the dwindling newspaper.
I may be too old to ask my Magic 8 Ball what the future holds, but I know I'm too young to sit on my butt and do things the same old way. So that's why at the recent SDMA conference, I was all ears at sessions on the future of web analytics, the future of search engine marketing, and integrating the digital experience.
What's on your Murtaugh List?

| That's a tough one...I'd like to think I wouldn't rule out doing something just because of my age...but I suppose if I had to choose one thing I'm too old for, it's Hostess cupcakes or something along that line (Twinkies, HoHos, Oatmeal creme pies, etc.)...by now I figure I should know better... |
