Work/Life Balance?

Most days I love being a designer, particularly when I get the opportunity to work on projects that connect with my own personal experiences. Recently I had the opportunity to work with Northwest Kidney Centers to create the visual identity for their new institution, the Kidney Research Institute. I was thrilled to get to work with an organization that does so much good, while simultaneously becoming involved with a cause that hits so close to home.

My husband went into kidney failure about eight years ago. He was on dialysis three days per week, five hours at a time for ten months before my best friend was matched to donate him one of her kidneys. The transplant was a success and transformed our lives to say the very least. A year and a half later, we were devastated to find out that, despite the strong cocktail of anti-rejection drugs he was taking, his body was rejecting the transplant. It wasn't long before he was back on dialysis with the same grueling schedule. Now, almost five years later, we're still waiting - along with 80,000 others - for another chance to unplug from the dialysis machine and get a healthy and normal life back. When Northwest Kidney Centers came to GA, not knowing my connection their cause, I jumped at the opportunity.

The Kidney Research Institute is a partnership between Northwest Kidney Centers and the University of Washington, Department of Nephrology, whose goals are to make a difference in patient treatment, quality of life and life expectancy. Not only does NKC/KRI research and development have a direct impact on my personal life, but with 450,000 people in kidney failure today, and an estimated 2 million by 2030, the need for a solution is imperative.

It's been an honor to work with the Kidney Research Institute. Even though my job doesn't require me to don a lab coat and operate the latest mass spectrometer, I'm glad to be part of the Northwest Kidney Center's efforts toward the improvement of life and the advancement of kidney research and treatment.
